Smoothie recipes run the gamut from fruity to green to decadent, covering a wide range of textures and flavor combinations. Not only are they extremely easy to make and customize, but they are also portable , great for drinking on the go. The potassium-rich banana has always been one of the most popular fruits to include in a smoothie, yielding a thick, creamy concoction that's packed with nutrients. While many fruits pair well with bananas, peanut butter and banana is a combination that's hard to beat. The two combine to form a killer smoothie with endless possibilities for variations. The following simple smoothie recipes add chocolate and strawberry to bring the peanut butter banana smoothie to the next level.

Standard peanut butter banana smoothie

Blend two frozen bananas with one cup of low-fat milk and two tablespoons of peanut butter; creamy or smooth will each work. Depending on the strength of your blender, it should only take about a minute or two. This recipe yields about 16 ounces, suitable for two servings. This flavor combination is equally perfect for breakfast or dessert.

Peanut butter, banana, and chocolate smoothie with a kick

Even more appropriate for dessert, this variation replaces the regular milk with chocolate milk. Low-fat milk is optimal due to the richness of the peanut butter. If possible, also try replacing the peanut butter with a peanut butter and chocolate blend. Several brands carry this combination; look in the organic foods aisle. Optionally, add a teaspoon of chili powder (or more, if you'd like) for a subtle smoky kick. As before, blend everything with two frozen bananas until you achieve your desired consistency, usually one to two minutes.

Peanut butter, banana, and strawberry smoothie

To keep the focus on the bananas, use two frozen bananas as before, replace the milk with strawberry milk, and include two tablespoons of either peanut butter or a peanut butter chocolate blend. To boost the strawberry flavor, replace one banana with one cup of frozen strawberries.

The key to a successful smoothie of any kind is getting the most pleasing ratio of ingredients, which varies depending on the desired consistency. While these particular smoothie recipes result in a drink with a velvety, rich texture, it's easier to make them thinner (try adding more milk) or even thicker (substitute plain yogurt for milk). You can also try using non-frozen bananas and adding crushed ice for a slightly different texture. Figure out a ratio that works well for your taste, and then change one ingredient or one amount at a time to create other smoothie recipes that you love.
